Headache is a symptom that involves pain in the head that can arise from many disorders. In Ayurveda, headache can be caused due to sensitive nervous system or improper digestion. Stress - both physical and mental - affects the nervous system causing headache. How is headache related to digestion? As referred in one of our earlier articles, 'ama' are the toxins formed due to improper digestion. These toxins can cause headache.

One way of handling headache is by alleviating the pain. This can bring temporary relief only. Alternatively, understanding the root cause and treating it is more efficient. Boiling crushed fresh ginger in water, filtering and drinking the warm liquid helps in reducing headache. Simple stretching neck exercises and massage help in relieving stress. Happy No Smoking Day! ( 11 - 03 - 2014 ) ::

Respiratory Health

Well, we all know smoking is injurious to health. Is this yet another article to mention the same or is there something more to it?

Respiration is one of the important life processes in which oxygen breathed in from the nose and carbon dioxide is breathed out. As we all know, lungs are the organs that helps in this exchange of gases. The respiratory system is the channel that carries the gases along with the vital life force, known as the prANa. Maintenance of the respiratory tract is therefore very important. Problems in the respiratory tract can arise due to improper diet, seasonal changes, polluted air, poor posture and lack of exercise. These can result in wind related imbalance like asthma, heat related imbalance and cold related imbalance like accumulation of mucus. Bronchitis, pneumonia, sore throat, cold and lymphatic congestion are few more conditions that can occur.

Respiratory health can be improved through controlled diet. Avoid fried food and, having light breakfast and dinner are the best ways to be followed. Drinking luke warm water helps to break chest congestion. Herbs like eucalyptus, oregano and peppermint are few of the lung supporting herbs. Warming the body through exercise is another way for maintaining respiratory health. Yoga, meditation and, pranayama, in specific, cleanses the respiratory tract, strengthens the lungs and supports healthy lung function.

Eye Care ::

Today is Glaucoma Day!

Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to the optic nerve of the eyes and gets worse over time. It is often associated with a buildup of pressure inside the eye. Glaucoma tends to be inherited and may not show up until later in life. The angle of vision alters as glaucoma increases. This can permanently damage vision in the affected eye and lead to blindness if left untreated. Glaucoma usually occurs when pressure in the eye increases. This can happen when eye fluid is not circulating normally in the front part of the eye. Glaucoma usually occurs in both eyes, but it may involve each eye to a different extent.

There are various Ayurvedic treatments for eye rejuvenation and must be taken under the supervision of a health practitioner. Have nutritious food like vegetables, fruits and sprouts having lots of vitamins and minerals. Taking Indian gooseberry with honey reduces the eye tension. Consuming plenty of water is important, but alcohol, coffee and smoking must be avoided as these increase the fluid pressure inside the eyes. Pranayama helps in improving results. And remember to reduce the stress on the eyes.

Today is world kidney day! ( 13 - 03 - 2014 ) ::

Kidney Care

Kidneys are amazing in that they perform the natural filtering of the blood and remove wastes. Regulation of electrolytes, maintenance of acid–base balance, regulation of blood pressure in the body and hormone secretion are few more functions of the kidneys. Kidneys are therefore very important for the proper functioning of the body. But what happens sometimes is that some salts get collected in the kidneys. These salts are from the mineral nutrients that are from high nutrient density dietary sources few of them being dry fruits, salt and green leafy vegetables. As the concentration of mineral nutrients increase, it can start depositing in the kidney ending up as kidney stone. As this is an obstruction in the urinary tract, it causes severe pain which is undesirable.

Stones are formed in the body due to dryness. Intake of beans and pulses is not advisable. Do not sit continuously for a long time or sleep just after having food. Extract of basil juice and honey can help in maintaining overall health of the kidney. Watermelon, celery and lemon juice can be used based on the type of kidney stone. Drinking alcohol must be avoided as it increases the chance of stone formation. The easiest possible remedy is drinking sufficient water. This helps in cleansing the urinary system and prevents the formation of stones.
